DOLORES IBARRURI BHI

The name of our teaching institution is IES DOLORES IBARRURI BHI, a public school located in Abanto-Zierbena, 15 kilometres far from the capital city of Bilbao in the Basque Country. Abanto was originally divided into concejos which are nowadays called neighbourhoods, being one of those Gallarta, where the school is. Gallarta, with a population of about 5,000 inhabitants, is a beautiful and quiet area surrounded by mountains and close to the beach of La Arena. It is also a town proud of its past, which can be observed in the Gallarta Mining Museum, a centre dedicated to the study and dissemination of knowledge of mining culture and history in the Basque country and specially, its mining area in Gallarta. The city is well communicated to nearby cities or to the capital city of Bilbao by means of public transport or via a motorway, making it accessible to shops, hospitals, cinemas, beaches, etc.

The school has three different educational levels: Compulsory and Non-Compulsory Education and Vocational Training, and the total amount of students are nearly 500. That means that the school is not very big and turns it into a quite familiar institution, where all teachers know all students and students know all teachers.
